Aadi Amavasya is the new Moon Day that falls in the Tamil month of Aadi (Jul – Aug). Aadi Amavasya is one among the three most powerful new Moon days to offer Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) to honor your ancestors and receive their eternal blessings.

The month of Aadi is considered highly auspicious, when divine forces bless the Earth with grace and answer your prayers. Offering Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) for your ancestors on Aadi Amavasya helps their souls attain Moksha (salvation) and also confers their blessings upon you. .

Astrologically, on any Amavasya (new Moon) day, the Sun and the Moon reside in the same sign. The Sun signifies your father and soul; whereas the Moon signifies your mother and mind. Aadi Amavasya assumes greater importance because the Sun and the Moon dwell in the sign of Moon, which is Cancer

It is believed that on Aadi Amavasya, spirits are more willing to accept your offerings and are satiated when their successors perform tarpanam rituals for them. Also every year during the month of Aadi, the Sun moves towards the South which is called ‘Dakshinayanam’ (Dhakshin means south and ayana means travel). Since this is the first new Moon day of the period, it is regarded as the more powerful day for performing Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) to your ancestors.

According to the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, every human soul is indebted to the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva with three important debts. ‘Pitru Rin’ (debt to ancestors) is one among them, which is offered to Lord Brahma. This debt can be cleared by performing Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) by the children to their ancestors.

Taking a holy dip in Theertham (sacred river/sea) is considered a pre-requisite to cleanse self from impurities, before commencing any Tarpanam (ancestral ritual). Most of the devotees usually gather at Agni Theertham at Rameshwaram, South India on this sacred day to complete their final rituals for their ancestors. Other Theerthams include Thriveni Sangamam in Kanyakumari and various holy Ghats on the banks of Cauvery River. You can observe complete or partial fasting with a single meal on this day to mark your devotion towards your ancestors. Any Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) performed on this day satisfies your ancestors and bestows you with abundance and good fortune.

Performing Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) to your ancestors on this day can bestow the following blessings:

- Relieve you from negative Karma.
- Gift you with prosperity and happiness in life .
- Bless your generation with good health, wealth and prosperity.
- Performing Tarpanam (ancestral ritual) on Aadi Amavasya can liberate the souls of your departed ancestors.
- According to Garuda Purana, offering til (sesame seeds) and water to your ancestors on this day pleases them and can bestow you with longevity, success, relief from debts, destruction of enemies and progeny.

The sacred scriptures prescribe fire ceremony, Abishekam (hydration ceremony), Pooja/Archana (Light and Sound ceremony), Yantra and Mantra (special sounds) as the ways to offer your prayer to the divine. Out of these, fire ceremony is the most evolved spiritual technology on earth to connect with the divine beings. Participate in the remedial services to clear your karma and receive the blessings.
